How to Save Money in College

We all know how difficult it can be to get through college on a budget and students are almost guaranteed to rack up some debt during these years. There are just too many opportunities to spend money on entertainment, food, clothes, sporting events, the list is practically endless. Fortunately, it is possible to save a little of your money in college so that you have it when you really need it and don’t have to ask Mom and Dad for help.

• Save your spare change, after throwing all your change in a piggy bank for a few months it’ll add up nicely.
• If you live on campus and have a meal plan, use it every chance you get. Some plans may even allow you to take home good so don’t let it go to waste!
• You’re bound to make a couple late night stops to a burger joint or an IHOP, but you’d be wise to keep some healthy food around too like bagels and yogurt. Buying groceries is also considerably cheaper than eating out.
• Need a computer for college? Be sure to search for the student discounts that many companies offer. Refurbished models are also considerably cheaper, but better yet, use your school’s library or computer lab.
• Many campuses have on-site music and movie stores that accept trade-ins, save money on new purchases by trading in some of your stuff.
• Make sure you’re paying any bills you have on time, late fees and charges are an easy way to waste your money.
• Even if you have a car, other means of travel are almost always cheaper. Walking or the use of public transportation will save you money and help the environment.
• So you want to have the latest in style hair cut? Find a cosmetology school where the students do the job for free or at a discount.
• You’ll spend a small fortune on alcohol if you drink, but if you must, be cheap and drink where the specials are.
